Don Parkhurst, Jr.

Rhythm Guitar Mastery Instructor

Don Parkhurst, Jr., has been playing guitar for over 4 decades and teaching professionally for more than 20 years. He attended Hartford Conservatory of Music as well as Atlanta Institute of Music, has studied and taught out of the Troy Stetina Series methods for many years, as well as taken personal lessons with Alex Skolnick (Testament, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Savatage). His major area of specialty is Rhythm Guitar mastery. In Don's words, "Without rhythm you have no music." His other primary area of focus lies in the development of good practice habits. In regard to this, he says, "My job is not to just show you what to do but instead train you to do all this for yourself, because one day I won’t be there to help you.”

No matter how experienced you are—whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or even at an advanced level—rhythm and timing are essential, no matter what genre you prefer. Every note, no matter how perfectly played, is still a wrong note if it isn't played at the right time. Troy teaches you everything from the ground up and quickly increases the difficulty, so you're always challenged. Plus, learning songs keeps you engaged and prevents the boredom you might feel with random rhythm exercises you find on YouTube that don't actually add value. For me, this was one of the most beneficial courses I've ever taken. I can't wait for the lead guitar course. Keep it up, Troy!

This course exceeded my expectations! The lessons are well-structured, easy to follow, and packed with useful techniques that instantly leveled up my playing. Troy’s deep knowledge and enthusiasm for heavy rhythm guitar shine through in every lesson, making complex techniques feel approachable and exciting. His teaching style keeps me engaged and motivated, inspiring me to push my skills further. Sections comes with various extra studies, giving me plenty of material to jam with and truly solidify what I’ve learned. The riffs from these studies drill in the techniques covered at each step, reinforcing key concepts through practical application. Combined with the high-quality videos and other supplemental materials, this course took my skill above and beyond that of just the book Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol 1 by itself. The added resources make a huge difference, helping me internalize concepts in a way that working through the book alone couldn't achieve. Whether you're a beginner looking to build a strong foundation or an experienced player wanting to refine your groove, this course delivers!
